1. How is the Christian Classical Model of Education implemented at Classical Journeys?

The Christian Classical Model of Education links together the subject matter. For example, when studying Ancient History, the Geography and Literature selections will reflect the time period being studied. This provides the students with a well - rounded educational model. The beauty of a Classical Christian Worldview Program is that Biblical concepts are woven through every subject. The educational experience at Classical Journeys moves beyond "just a bible class" to deepen scriptural concepts at every age level. We encourage our parents to incorporate Christian character and truth across all the topics of study.

2. What advantages does Classical Journeys offer my family?

The advantage includes professionally selected curriculum, an online tutorial platform for assistance when needed, prepared assignments sheets for parent implementation, assistance with grading and testing (available in package add ons). This combination provides interaction and contact with excellent tutors who support your homeschool endeavor. This environment fosters motivation and accountability for students and parents in a supportive and academically challenging environment. Classical Journeys is committed to providing a high quality program that is cost effective. 3. Do I follow the Classical Journeys school year calendar?

No, you can follow your own schedule and calendar. Packages become available every year on July 1st. Tutors are available for assistance August through May. Tutorial assistance is not available in June or July, but administrative assistance will be covered during the summer months. All package services must be completed within one calendar year.

4. What is the Classical Journeys tutorial calendar?

Tutorial assistance is available from August through May. Thirty-three weeks of curriculum guides are currently offered. Due to the flexible nature of home school only 3 school day breaks are scheduled: Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Spring Break.

5. Who will be my child's tutor?

Classical Journeys has very high standards for their staff, thus your students will be offered quality instruction. Tutors offered through the tutorial model are currently teaching this material in a Christian home school tutorial and most are following the program with their own children. All are required to have at least a four college degree and many have advanced degrees. We are blessed to have pastoral staff included in our repertoire of tutors who have Masters of Divinity degrees.

6. Are all tutors certified teachers?

Classical Journeys does maintain a high educational standard for their instructors. Some, but not all teachers have current certification. All instructors have at least a 4-year college degree and many retain graduate level training and degrees. Most have both professional and home school experience with their own children. This unique perspective makes the Classical Journeys staff a very valuable resource for our parents and students. All are academically qualified to teach the subject matter they oversee within the program.

7. Do I get grades from my child's tutor?

Classical Journeys does have a package add on that includes a grading module. Progress Reports and assistance with grading and testing are available through this add on. As always, the best academic implementation for your student is for parents to grade daily work and send testing modules in for objective testing. It provides the best of both worlds: automatic feedback for the student and accountability and objectivity in the grading and testing.

8. What courses are offered by Classical Journeys?

Classical Journeys currently offers a complete Pre-K through 6th grade course options. This package includes all humanities, math and science courses needed for a school year. For grades seven and eight humanities packages are offered. An interchangeable 7th/8th grade humanities package is developed. The module for World History will be ready for the 2011-2012 school years. An American History package will be accessible for the 2012-2013 school year. Two rotations of High School modules are being offered for the 2011-2012 school year: American Government and Economics and World History with consecutive models to follow in the next two years: American History and World Geography. Math and Science are not offered as part of 7th-12th grade packages. For academic standards, those courses are best served by one-on-one tutoring options.

9. What about High School Foreign Language credits?

Classical Journeys incorporates foreign language into their high school curriculum guides. Parents may utilize the lesson plans provided, but often foreign languages are best served by a one-on-one model. This portion of the high school curriculum guides is a free add on. The 2011-2012 school year course offering will be Latin 1 with Latin 2 to follow. Greek 1 and 2 will be offered in consecutive years.

10. What are my (the parent's) responsibilities?

Legally, morally, and ethically home school parents are the primary purveyors of academic instruction. Classical Journeys is the professional support staff for you the parents. Our tutors provide academically challenging instructional curriculum guides that introduce the weekly concepts, but parents are the ultimate authority and responsible party in any home school endeavor. The measure of success in our program is equal to the diligence provided in the home environment.

We kindly ask our parents to maintain a current email address for communication from the tutor and or administrative staff.

11. What are the tutor's responsibilities?

The tutor will provide a monthly assignment sheet outlining required work. (This is posted on our website monthly.) For those choosing to pay by the year, the entire yearly curriculum will be available on July 1st of each year. S/he will also monitor and provide feedback and assistance on our online tutorial platform and will respond to communications within 24 hours. (Unless extenuating circumstances prevents this, such as illness, a death in the family, computer issues, etc.) Tutors will also provide quarterly evaluations for those parents purchasing the package E add on, in the form of a progress report, based on test, quizzes and papers.

12. How much time per day should I expect my child to spend on schoolwork?

This varies greatly by grade and ability and family structure. The Classical Journeys Program is only as good as the diligent home school family! Students in K-4th grade should expect only a few hours of parent led instructional time, while upper grades (5th-12th) will spend several more hours. Our program is academically challenging to most students. We endeavor to find the appropriate load for each grade. New students may struggle initially to complete work, but with perseverance students usually gain the self-discipline and familiarity with the program to complete work in an average school day (5 to 6 hours for upper school students). Good communication with instructors regarding workload is encouraged to aid the incoming family find an appropriate balance.

13. What if my child cannot complete the work assigned for the week?

The workload at Classical Journeys is age appropriate and typical for each age group. We recognize the parent is the ultimate authority regarding completion of assignments so weekly tasking's and are strictly up to the parent to modify or complete. We encourage parents to realize that tasks are given for necessary academic mastery at each level. The teaching of consistency and accountability helps students prepare for their future job related tasks by developing a good work ethic and provides positive structure for parents to follow.

14. Will my child's education be competitive with state and national standards?

Classical Journeys provides an excellent educational model that is competitive with state and national standards. The subject matter provides most of the credits needed for graduation with a college-preparatory emphasis. This curriculum has in a tutorial model setting produced ACT scores in the 90th percentiles. As a homeschool program this is indicative of highly motivated parents, students, and tutors.

15. What if my K-6th Grade child is above grade level in Math?

Classical Journeys encourages advanced placement in Mathematical subject matter. Parents need to notify both the office and the individual tutor before the first day of class to ensure that they receive the appropriate math course work.

16. What are the tuition payment options?

Tuition can be paid monthly via check or online through the Classical Journeys Store and is due between the 1st and the 10th of the month. Classical Journeys offers a discount for those paying by the year.

17. I really love a specific curriculum I'm using this year. Can that be integrated with Classical Journeys?

There are certain subjects that are not integral to the unit studies model at Classical Journeys. The subject matter covered in Math, Science, and Critical Thinking are areas where flexibility can easily be applied. As this structure is completely up to the parent to implement, we encourage parents to modify and they like.

18. Does the cost of the packages cover the cost of my books and supplies?

As with all homeschool programs, the purchase of books and supplies is a parental responsibility. A detailed booklist is provided for all enrolled students. Classical Journeys also provides an online bookstore. Discount coupons in incremental amounts are offered throughout the summer.
